Kawasaki KLX230R was indeed created as a genuine off-road motorcycle that can only be used on off-road lanes. This motorbike is not legal for use on the highway because it does not have a variety of highway equipment, ranging from lights, speedometer consoles, rear view mirrors, plate holders, and others. As a result, the weight of the KLX230R is much lighter compared to the KLX230 which can be used on the highway. But actually the light weight of the KLX230R does not only come from the absence of various completeness of the highway earlier. As a genuine off-road motorbike, the KLX230R from the factory there is equipped with a variety of more special parts that make lighter weights. Call it the swing arm made of aluminum, while the KLX230 still uses an iron swing arm. Maybe the two fuel tanks are also different. For comparison, The KLX230R weighs only 115 kg which makes it compatible with other genuine off-road motorcycles Yamaha TT-R230 and Honda CRF230F / CRF250F. On the other hand the KLX230 has a 132 kg weight, it is terrible to play off-road with that much weight. Yups, although designed as a genuine off-road motorbike, the fact is that the KLX230R uses a muffler that is quite identical to the KLX230. The exhaust is big, long, and full of catalytic converters which make the sound clogged and pull less. The positive thing is that with this muffler KLX230R got a green sticker alias environmentally friendly in the state of California (United States) so that it can be used on the highway there. Noise and pass the exhaust emission test which is very strict in California. In Indonesia, it still can’t be used on the highway. The regulation here is different from there. So, the most appropriate way to reduce the weight of the KLX230R is to replace the muffler!
Free flow muffler with various brands that are widely available on the market usually has a compact size. Not too fat and not too long, plus there’s no catalytic converter. By installing the free flow muffler KLX230R weights can be a decent diet. Most can not be reduced by around 4-5 kg. This means that just enough to replace the exhaust weight KLX230R can be reduced to around 110 kg. Really easy right ?? Besides lightly, it is certain that power and torque will also increase by replacing the muffler. At least the power rises by 1-2 HP and torque increases by 1-2 Nm. So far, only Norifumi has declared that it will launch a special KLX230 / KLX230R muffler. But in the future I am sure there will be more other brands that will follow.
What about the KLX230? Can you make it easy too? KLX230 which is actually a motor trail trail has indeed been born with a heavy weight (132 kg). If you just replace the muffler, it only drops 4-5 kg to 127-128 kg, which on paper remains heavy. Removing all equipment including lights, rear view mirror, speedometer console and plate holder may not necessarily reduce the weight to 115 kg like the KLX230R. So my advice, if you want to buy a motorcycle for off-road, it’s better to take KLX230R. The price is indeed more expensive, but not complicated. Buy directly can be used to the off-road lane. At most, replace the exhaust so that it is more ferocious and lighter. Well, if you buy KLX230 for off-road, the additional costs are still quite a lot. Must buy genuine off-road tires, rear gear ask for a bigger one, remove various motorcycle accessories, replace the muffler, and get a heavier weight bonus. Just FYI, the price of a KLX230R genuine off-road motorbike is IDR 48.9 million off the road without letters, while the KLX230 motorized trail bike is priced at IDR 42.5 million on the road in Jakarta, complete with letters. From the price alone it seems that the KLX230R has something special.
